Hours later, Steve, Sarah, and Annie found themselves seated at a table in the Great Hall. Peanut was sitting a few feet away, watching all the people walk by. With the tension level of the castle finally returning to normal, Steve and Sarah decided to introduce Annie to her first Lentarian meal.

“So what is this? Looks like a big Hot Pocket.”

Steve snorted, spraying water across his plate.

“It’s called a phedra,” Sarah explained to her sister. “It has meat, cheese, and some veggies in it.”

“Spicy?”

“No. Even Steve will eat them.”

Surprised, Annie raised an eyebrow in his direction. “Really? No further explanations are necessary.”

“Hardy har har.”

“I still can’t believe the castle wasn’t attacked,” Sarah remarked, cutting into her own pastry. “I thought that was the whole plan.”

“It was, Lady Sarah.”

They all turned to see Tristan smiling at them.

“We have room for one more. Have a seat.”

Annie scooted over so that Tristan could sit down.

“So what happened?” Steve wanted to know. “Where was the attack? Did I miss it?”

“What happened,” Tristan explained, “was that they were counting on the castle being unprotected, or at least with a minimal contingent of armed personnel. By the time they arrived, however, Commander Rhenyon had returned, as well as Lieutenant Pheron. They seriously underestimated us. This time. I do not think they will again should there be a next time.”

“So they did attack? I didn’t hear anything.”

“We saw them at the edge of the forest. All they did was stare at the castle. I think they were waiting for the most opportune time to attack, and when it became apparent that the castle was too well guarded, they finally deduced their mission had failed.”

“Where’s Mikal?” Annie asked.

Tristan turned to her. “He is visiting his mother. He has tried restoring her jhorun.”

“Tried?”

“He says he has done the same thing for her than he did for me, but so far, it does not appear that the queen’s jhorun has regenerated. We have to wait for some signs of it to appear before we know that it has been fully restored.

“How long will that take?”

“Unknown, Sir Steve. As soon as Mikal restored mine, I was able to conjure a small dagger for a few moments. It takes a while to heal.”

“Oh, I get it,” Sarah said, nodding her head. “You can tell when your jhorun is working because you can see when you conjure a dagger. The queen can’t manifest hers at all. It very well might already be healing but it’s probably just hard to tell.”

“Agreed, Lady Sarah. Now we must wait. Lady Annie, may I ask ye a question?”

Having taken a large bite out of her phedra, Annie covered her mouth and looked at the Lentarian she had come to regard as a close friend. Swallowing hastily, she tried to clear her mouth. “Of course.”

“Did ye use any ointment when ye soaked those pieces of cloth back at that stream?”

“Ointment?” Annie shook her head. “I don’t have any ointment. Why? Haven’t you seen a doctor yet?”

“The reason I ask, Lady Annie,” Tristan raised his shirt, “is that I apparently do not need to.
